The Saint Alphonsus Ski & Trauma Conference returns to Sun Valley Resort Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 5-7.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Cody Byrns, a best-selling author and life coach who suffered severe burns over 40 percent of his body and was left for dead when he was rear-ended by a truck while stopped at a red light on a highway.
Other sessions will examine things like medicine on the fire lines, providing medical care on a ski mountain, backcountry management of hypothermia and frostbite, the treatment and prevention of drowning, surface ice rescue and hands-on training for mass casualty events.
Other workshops will provide a look at innovative therapies and advancements in resuscitation science that are shaping the future of cardiac care, post traumatic stress disorder following acute physical trauma, humanitarian aid in war environments and treating ankle sprains.
The annual conference, founded by Dr. Richard Moore in collaboration with the late mountaineer Lou Whittaker and others, is designed for ski patrollers and first responders from rural clinics, BLM and Forest Service agencies and other organizations who want training that may help save lives.
It offers hands-on medical simulation and discussions on ways first responders can prevent burnout. And it offers 13 contact hours of training and education.
