STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN BOSSICK

Betty Overhoff stood outside Jane’s Artifacts handing out what she called “adult” candy, as a colleague handed out candy to kids during Hailey’s Halloween Hoopla on Halloween Day.

A few adults protested that they were trying to cut down on carbs, but that didn’t dampen her enthusiasm.

“Over the years I’d go with my kids and say, ‘What about me?’ ” she said. “I’ve come all the way from Sun Valley to hand out candy because I don’t get kids there. I love Halloween: You don’t have to give presents. You don’t have to send cards. You just wish everyone ‘Happy Halloween.’ ”

It was a perfect fall afternoon for trick or treating on Friday as temperatures climbed into the upper 50s. And hundreds of kids and adults took to Main Street Hailey and a few offshoots.

Nurses from St. Luke’s Wood River handed out glow sticks and Halloween safety tips. Representatives from the Toy Store handed out Sharkz toys.

And Mountain Humane volunteers outside The Barkin’ thrift store ran out of children’s books they’d collected over the past year, as well as stuffed toys. But they still managed to come up with Zip-loc bags of candy to hand out.

“I’ve never seen so many kids in my life!” enthused one of the volunteers.
