The Space in Hailey has been named a 2025 Lights on Afterschool Champion by the Idaho Out-of-School Network, an organization founded in 2014 to provides tools and resources for quality youth programs in Idaho.
This award celebrates organizations that elevate the importance of afterschool programs and demonstrate exceptional impact in their communities.
This impact is most clearly reflected in the remarkable growth and success of The Space’s Forward Learning Scholars (FLS) program. Forward Learning Scholars provides middle school students a safe, supportive place to build academic confidence, curiosity, and connection. Trusted relationships and engaging activities help students strengthen school skills, practice persistence, and explore new interests.
Last year 111 students participated in the FLS program, a 66% increase compared to the previous school year. This growth reflects both rising student need and the program’s reputation for delivering meaningful academic support in a welcoming, student-centered environment.
According to Blaine County’s 2024 Communities for Youth Data, only 15 percent of students feel a strong sense of “mattering”—feeling valued and important in their relationships and community. And, just 35 percent report having a trusted adult outside their family to turn to in times of need.
The Forward Learning Scholar is changing the story for middle schoolers in our valley—73 percent of FLS students report coming to The Space to connect with trusted adults and 96 percent report that they feel safe at The Space.
The FLS program also aims to expand middle schoolers' connection to their community with 84 percent of regular attendees participating in at least one enrichment activity led by a community partner.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” said Aaron Bronson, executive director of The Space. “Our team works hard to build programs that not only support students academically but also connect them to the broader community. This award affirms the importance of our mission and the incredible young people we are privileged to serve.”
The Space’s continued growth reflects both community support and the increasing demand for high-quality out-of-school programs.
The Space offers personalized tutoring, afterschool and summer programs and mentorship that empowers students with skills and confidence. As a nonprofit, The Space is primarily funded by private donors. It costs $2,500 per student to provide this all-inclusive service to middle school students.
