The Spot is staging “Avenue Q,” the winner of the Tony Award Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
And, if you hurry, you can nab a ticket before they’re all sold out.
The musical runs Jan. 21-Feb. 1 at The Spot, 220 Lewis St., in Ketchum. Donation-based concessions are available before the show.
The musical comedy parodies children’s education shows like “Sesame Street” but with adult themes. Like “Sesame Street,” it offers heartfelt lessons about life. But, unlike “Sesame Street,” it serves up some pointed satire with a heaping dose of profanity and adult content, such as internet pornography.
It revolves around a recent college English graduate who is scrambling to find an apartment and a job. He finally finds an apartment in a building with a wacky assortment of characters, including a kindergarten assistant teacher, an obsessively neat Republican investment banker, a slacker, an aspiring comedian with no job, a therapist with no clients, a surly recluse who surfs the Internet for pornography, and Gary Coleman, the former child actor who is now serving as the apartment superintendent.
It’s billed as a smart, hilarious and unapologetically adult take on growing up.
The characters, with the exception of the laid-back guy, Japanese therapist and Gary Coleman, are puppets.
The show features New York-based Paul Rescigno, who has performed in several Sun Valley Shakespeare productions and the Laughing Stock Theater’s recent comedy show; and local actors Eryn Alvey, David Janeski, Aly Wepplo, Megan Mahoney and Elyse Duffield.
Out-of-town actors are Jos Banks and Austin Anderson.
The show is being directed by Brett Moellenberg. R.L. Rowsey directs a band that includes Chip Booth on guitar, Tess Makena on keys and Michael Kelly on drums.
The 2-hour, 15-minute musical is recommended for those 17 and older as it includes adult language and puppet nudity.
The show starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 21-23; 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24; 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25; 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Jan. 27-31, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1.
Tickets start at $33 with tables costing $125. Students and those under 30 can avail themselves of $20 and $25 tickets at https://www.spotsunvalley.com/spotseason/avenueq
Wednesday, Jan. 21, is Producer’s Night with a cocktail hour featuring hors d’oeuvres and beverages beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets that night cost $120 to $275 for a table.
