A Dine Elder from Canyon De Chelly in Arizona will tell how she lives in beauty in challenging times Monday at The Community Library in Ketchum.

Lupita McClanahan will talk about her tribe’s Hozho, or The Beauty Way, at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.

She was raised in secrecy by her clan’s medicine people so she could keep her culture alive without being indoctrinated at boarding school.

She may be one of the only indigenous people left in North America who was raised in the traditional way by traditional elders and still lives on her ancestral land.

She has served as a park ranger at Canyon De Chelly National Monument, the home of Early Puebloans and Navajos. Today she offers hiking, camping and cultural immersion tours through her Footpath Journeys.

Making her home in a traditional eight-sided hogan with a dirt floor and log walls, she attempts to build a bridge between her culture and the modern world by talking about her relationship with the land, plant medicine, geology, people’s relationships with one another and how to move forward together.

To attend in person, RSVP at https://thecommunitylibrary.libcal.com/event/15851763. The program will also be livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/5673372, but a recording will not be available to watch later.
