The Sun Valley Music Festival’s 2026 Summer Season gets underway in the Sun Valley Pavilion on Monday, July 27, when pianist Orion Weiss will headline opening night.
But the Music Festival is bringing music out into the community a little earlier, thanks to a Concert Truck!
The 16-foot box truck, which opens into a professional pop-up stage with lighting, sound and a baby grand piano, will pull up to various sites in the valley offering free 45-minute concerts featuring Pianist Susan Zhang and Chamber Music by the Festival String Quartet.
“It’s designed to bring high-caliber chamber music out of traditional halls and into the places people already gather — parks, schools, neighborhoods, and community hubs — creating welcoming musical moments,” said R.L. Rowsey, operations director for the Sun Valley Music Festival.
Zhang made her orchestral debut at age 12 with the Augusta Symphony. She since has performed with orchestras across North America, Europe and Asia.
The truck will make stops at a variety of sites, including The Hunger Coalition in Bellevue and The Senior Connection and Hailey Library in Hailey.
Both The Senior Connection and Hailey Public Library are making a party of it. The Senior Connection, for instance, is inviting people to purchase lunch inside beginning at 11:30 a.m. and settle in for the concert on the front lawn on Friday. And The Hailey Public Library has invited 208 Tacos to sell food on site from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. during its concert on Saturday.
“We’re hoping people can stop by and enjoy a Senior Connection lunch while listening to live music on our front lawn,” said Sydney McGlaflin, communications manager for The Senior Connection
Launched in 2016 by Zhang and pianist Nick Luby, The Concert Truck is redefining how people experience live music by bringing world-class chamber music directly into such everyday spaces as city streets, parks, schools and neighborhoods.
This innovative stage makes it possible for world-class artists to share exceptional performances outside traditional venues, creating unexpected, welcoming encounters with music.
The Concert Truck entered a new chapter in 2025 when it was acquired by the Seattle Chamber Music Society, an organization that shares its mission of making chamber music welcoming and accessible to all.
Luby himself, for instance, has performed more than 600 concerts on downtown city streets and at farmers markets.
Rowsey said that The Concert Truck is designed to reach those in the South Valley for whom geography and transportation can sometimes pose a barrier, even for an admission-free festival.
“For 42 years, Sun Valley Music Festival has been a beloved summer tradition in the Wood River Valley, guided by our mission to enrich, inspire and instill in our community a lifelong love of classical music through extraordinary, free concerts, and education programs,” he said. “The Concert Truck residency advances that mission by taking live, high-caliber performances beyond the Sun Valley Pavilion and The Argyros Performing Arts Center and into the places where people already gather in the South Valley.
Instead of asking new audiences to come to the music, the Festival will bring the music to them, partnering with trusted local organizations that already serve and convene the community, he added.
“The outcome is both immediate — shared joy, connection and access — and long term: building familiarity and trust that can translate into future concert attendance, deeper engagement, and a stronger sense of belonging in the Festival’s summer season.”
