Until his death in 1988, much of architect Luis Barragan’s work was hidden from the world in a Swiss bunker.

Performance artist Jill Magid sought to resurrect his life and art, creating a daring proposition and film that become a fascinating art piece in itself.

The Sun Valley Museum of Art will show that film, “The Proposal,” at 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum. And, no, it’s not a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Mary Steenburgen, despite the similar name.

Instead, the 86-minute film follows Magid, an American artist who is preoccupied with the architect who is considered one of Mexico’s most important architects.

Barragan was known for his brightly colored houses. His archive was bought by a Swiss furniture brand owner who gave it to his fiancée as a wedding present. In response, Magid dreamed up a scheme to exchange a diamond ring made of Barragan’s ashes for his body of work.

Tickets are $10 for SVMoA members and $12 for nonmembers. For information, visit https://svmoa.org/. Or, call 208-726-9491.
