The Advocates want to start a Moxie Revolution in the Wood River Valley.
Wood River Valley residents are invited to get a free copy of the book “Moxie Girls Fight Back,” from the Advocates or watch the movie on Netflix. Then RSVP for an online discussion from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 24 and join the in-person zine-making at 4 p.m. on May 26 at The Advocates in Hailey.
The book and movie, “Moxie Girls Fight Back!” is about standing up to school sexism. It revolves around Vivian Carter who is fed up with a high school administration that thinks the football can do no wrong, with sexist dress codes, with hallway harassment and gross comments and with always following the rules.
Her mom was a tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Girl in the ‘90s and, using her as inspiration, Viv creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates.
It’s all about blowing off steam but it ends up taking on a life of its own as other girls engage with it. And soon Viv realizes that she has started nothing short of a girl revolution.
Copies of the book, reputed to be “sweet, funny and fierce,” according to “Moxie” director Amy Poehler, are available at The Advocates, 211 S. River St., in Hailey. The movie stars Hadley Robinson as Vivian and Patrick Schwarzenegger as the charming but insensitive football captain
