The Sun Valley Wellness Festival, which runs Friday through Monday, is offering a new free program called “Cook for Your Life: Eat the Rainbow.”

The program will be hosted by Corry Hart Clayville, director of partnerships for Cook for Your Life at Fred Hutch. It will feature a bilingual presentation, Nutrition 101, followed by a Cook-A-Long with Liza Schattenkerk, founding member of Food.com, and local chef Jhony Gomero of Jhony’s Peruvian Cuisine.

Herbert Romero, founder of the Hailey Hispanic Heritage Fest, will participate as translator and lead the Q&A.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Jhony’s Peruvian cuisine restaurant in Hailey and from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Sunday, June 27 at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute in Ketchum.

It addresses in particular breast cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Hispanic/Latina women in the United States. The disease tends to affect these women at a younger age and be more aggressive in them than in many populations. Part of the reason: the women are at higher risk of obesity, low physical activity and poorer access to quality health care.

The American Institute of Cancer Research estimates that packing meals with colorful, cancer-fighting fruits and vegetables can prevent up to 40 percent of cancers, along with recurrences and deaths.

That said, the program is geared for all women.

The class is being offered for free but registration is required due to limited space. To register, call Herbert Romero at 208-309-5902.

The program is being presented by the Sun Valley Wellness Festival in partnership with Fred Hutch Cook for Your Life, The Hunger Coalition, ProjecToolSuccess and Jhony’s Peruvian Cuisine.
