In the spring of 1983 massive flooding on the Colorado River prompted three men to jump into a wooden dory at Lee’s Ferry to row the entire length of the Colorado River in an attempt to nail the all-time record for the fastest boat ever propelled.
Kevin Fedarko, a regular contributor to Outside Magazine, told their story in the book “The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History through the Heart of the Grand Canyon.” And he will discuss themes from that book during a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum.
The lecture is hosted by the Sun Valley Museum of Art as part of its new BIG IDEA project “Untrammeled: At Wilderness’ Edge.”
Fedarko is National Geographic Explorer of the Year and New York Times bestselling author. He studied political science at Columbia University and Russian history at Oxford before joining the staff at Time magazine where he worked on the foreign affairs desk. He now lives and works in Flagstaff, Ariz.
