The Idaho Native Plant Society tends to focus on wildflowers, mushrooms and other plants that are small and near the ground.
But once a year nature lovers fan out to visit an outstanding tree in the area, which they fondly call “One Big Tree.”
That’ll be the case on Saturday, Oct. 2, when members of the Wood River chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society lead all-comers to a humongous Douglas fir west of Fairfield.
Those who wish to go should meet at the Hailey Park & Ride lot on River Street at 8:30 a.m. or at the Timmerman Hill Rest Stop, ready to leave at 9 a.m. Those who are comfortable doing so may carpool to the tree.
The walk is just 200 yards but the ground is uneven with gopher holes and sagebrush so appropriate footwear should be worn.
