A hike will be among the events honoring local veterans in the days leading up to Veterans Day on Thursday, Nov. 11.
The hike from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Adams Gulch will include representatives of Higher Ground who will welcome veterans at a popup tent in the parking area. There will be hot drinks and cookies.
In addition, a free lunch will be served veterans from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Senior Connection in Hailey. There is a suggested donation of $8 for non-veterans who wish to attend the lunch.
Higher Ground also is taking designated veterans into area schools to share about the importance of their military service to the country.
They will record a TV interview with kids at the Sun Valley Community School on Monday. Then they’ll visit with students at:
- Wood River High School from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday
- Silver Creek High School from 11:15 to noon Tuesday
- Sage School in Hailey from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday
Participants include Tricia Wood, Michael Vigueria, Nick Miller, Matt Crow, Rand Smith, Bruce Shahbaz, Reid Sanborn and Nick Hoff.
Veterans Day was called Armistice Day when it was founded to mark the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to acknowledge the heroism of all veterans in all wars.
