Choral EvenSong returns to St. Thomas Episcopal Church tonight after a 23-month hiatus prompted by the pandemic.
The service of choral music, readings and prayers, which is always held at sunset, will be held at 5:30 p.m. one Sunday each month. Each will be followed by a reception.
Each offers a reflection on an important event or person in the Christian faith:
- Nov. 21 is focused on Mechtilde of Haceborn, a Saxon Christian saint and Benedictine nun famous for her beautiful voice, and Gertrude the Great, a Benedictine nun and mystic of the 13th century
- Dec. 19, Thomas the Apostle, called Doubting Thomas because he initially doubted the resurrection of Jesus Christ
- Jan. 16, Harriett Bedell, 19th century missionary to the Cheyenne in Oklahoma, the Seminole of Florida and the indigenous peoples of Alaska
- Feb. 20, Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist
- March 20, the Annunciation of Jesus to Mary
EvenSong was inspired by the monastic tradition of Matins and Vespers.
