Taize Services will begin this week at St. Thomas Episcopal Church but on a new night.
The mid-winter tradition will switch from Wednesdays to Tuesdays. The first will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30. Services will continue through the end of February wit a two-week break during the Christmas holidays.
What is Taize?
It’s a quiet, meditative, candle-lit service started with an emphasis on peace and justice in Burgundy, France. Upon entering the darkened sanctuary, worshippers are given a program and a lighted votive candle they can place on the steps leading to the altar before or after the service begins. The service involves chanting, spoken prayer and silent meditation led by clergy and laypersons.
Those who wish may also walk the labyrinth on the patio outside for centering and contemplation prior to the start of service.
