Lady Elk Finds Christmas Dinner Beats Twigs

STORY BY KAREN BOSSICK

We’ve seen and heard of plenty of bears raiding the garbage. But a few days ago Jack McCullough caught a lady elk munching on Christmas dinner leftovers from a garbage can on Juniper Road in Elkhorn.

Amidst the heavy snows, a dinner of turkey, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole was apparently just too good to pass up!

On average an elk eats about three pounds of food a day for every hundred pounds It weighs. So, a female cow that weighs between 500 and 600 pounds can easily put away 15 to 18 pounds.

Given that, let’s hope there was leftover pizza in the garbage, as well!
