New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Selingo will discuss his most recent book taking a look inside college admissions on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Selingo will discuss “Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions” during a free presentation at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Sun Valley Community School’s Trail Creek Campus Hagenbuch Hall. A meet and greet with the author will follow from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
The book dispels entrenched notions of how to compete and win at the admissions game, describing how who gets in is frequently more about the college’s agenda than the applicant. And it purports that teenagers and parents stand to gain when they broaden their notion of what qualifies as a good college.
Selingo has written about higher education for more than two decades, writing three bestselling books. “There IS Life After College” looks at how to land a good job after graduation. “College (Un)Bound” questions whether a college diploma is still worth pursuing at any price with student-loan debt surpassing $1 trillion and unemployment on the rise.
A regular contributor to “The Atlantic,” he is a special advisor for innovation and professor of practice at Arizona State University.
He lives in Washington, D.C., where he co-hosts the podcast “FutureU.”
The talk is part of the school’s College Counseling Office Speaker Series. Guests will be required to wear masks and complete a short health screening. Iconoclast Books will have copies of Selingo’s book for sale on site.
