Chamber Director Mike McKenna put it succinctly: “Since they call the hottest days of summer the ‘dog days,’ perhaps we should call the coldest days of winter the ‘cat days.’ ”
After all, he noted, these freezing temperatures of the past week make it appealing to stay in the house all day eating and taking naps.
But, said McKenna, that’s not the type of community we are, given our fondness for skiing, skating, hockey and, yup, curling.
And yet another winter activity is taking front and center stage this weekend when the City of Hailey will stage its second annual Snow Carving Contest.
The city has built eight snow blocks on Croy Street between The Barkin’ and Hailey Public Library. And teams will take up their chisels, saws and other tools of the trade today—Saturday, Feb. 5—as they turn those blocks into works of art.
In addition, there’ll be a Kids Snowperson Making Contest.
There’ll be beer, food and craft vendors at the nearby Hailey Town Square from 1 to 5 p.m. and the Hailey Public Library will be conducting a Used Book Sale.
Viewers will be able to vote for their favorite carving Feb. 6 through 13 at the Hailey Public Library.
“It should be fun, and we’re expecting the mayor and other city leaders to be there between 2 and 3,” said McKenna.
