A Night of Spanish Cinema—a new movie series highlighting Hispanic culture, directors and actors from Mexico, Central and South America—is being launched by the Hailey Public Library.
Noche de Cine Espanol will be offered the fourth Tuesday each month with the first one being held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the Hailey Town Center West, aka the old Copy and Print building across from the library.
The first film will be the 2014 English-language biographical film “Cesar Chavez: History is Made One Step at a Time.” Community organizer Herbert Romero will lead a discussion following the film.
“Cesar Chavez: History is Made One Step at a Time” tells the story of a non-violent civil rights leaders who fought for the writes of farm workers during the 1960s and ‘70s. It’s a different film than “Hail Cesar,” which was shown in the valley last year during an event honoring he civil rights activist.
Some of the future films will be in Spanish.
“We worked with our Hispanic advisors to identify movies of interest for our Hispanic neighbors,” said Kristin Fletcher, the library’s programs and engagement manager. “Many people remember that Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers with Delores Huerta and led large boycotts, which brought national attention to poor worker conditions. We thought this would be an excellent selection to launch the series because their work will be celebrated on March 31, which is National Farmworkers Day.”
