For three months last year Ketchum photographers Bob and Gina Poole joined the Great Wildebeest Migration as more than two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles moved to the northern range of their annual migration in the Masai Mara of Kenya in search of green pasture.
It’s considered one of the wonders of the natural world as it’s the largest mass movement of land animals on Earth. But it’s endangered by fences being erected across the landscape and other threats, such as crocodile-infested waters, wire snares and even tourism.
The film that the Pooles shot will premiere tonight—Wednesday, Oct. 19—on PBS Nature. “Running with the Beest” will show at 7 p.m. tonight on Channel 10 for those who have cable.
“The film is about the wildebeests’ migration told by two friends of ours who are Masai guides in Kenya,” said Gina Poole. “It tells the story of their incredible journey but also the threats to it and offer some solutions to preserving this amazing spectacle of nature.”
