Stargazers hope to beat this weekend’s pending snowstorm tonight as they hold a program called “Knowing the Night Sky.”
Bellevue astronomer Tim Frazier will point out the Orionid Meteor Shower, planets and deep sky objects, while talking about winter constellations and their lore.
The stargazing will start at 7:30 and go until about 10 p.m. at the Croy Canyon Trailhead 3.1 miles east of Hailey. Stargazers are encouraged to bring telescopes or binoculars if they have them. Frazier will also have his large telescopes on hand for people to use.
If the weather does not cooperate, the stargazers plan to meet Saturday, Oct. 22, at the same time, same place. Information will be posted at www.haileypubliclibrary.org by 5:30 p.m. tonight.
To get there, turn west at the traffic light at Bullion and Main Street in Hailey. Follow the road as it turns into Croy Canyon Road and go past the turnoff for Mountain Humane and the Rotarun ski area. Look for a small green street sign on the right that says Trailhead. It leads into the BLM’s parking lot.
Participants are asked to turn off their headlights and use parking lights as they drive in and out to preserve everyone’s night vision. Restrooms are available.
