Every time senior Lily Fitzgerald scores a goal for the Sun Valley Community School this year, the record book must be rewritten.
The career goal-scoring leader for the Cutthroats added three more to her impressive totals Saturday, leading her team to a 5-0 victory over the Wood River Wolverines at the Sagewillow Soccer Complex in Elkhorn.
In front of a large crowd of Wolverine and Cutthroat fans, Fitzgerald opened up the scoring, bending a penalty kick from the left corner just out of the reach of Wood River goalie Marcella Fisher. A few minutes later, Aubrey Dunfield found the top of the net to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
Fitzgerald struck again late in the first half, breaking away from the last Wolverine defender to beat the goalie to her right and put the Cutthroats up 3-0 at the halftime break.
The Wolverines battled throughout the second half, frequently forcing the action at the Cutthroats’ end of the field and giving themselves several scoring opportunities. However, Sun Valley Community School’s goalie Sophia Sturgeon was up to the task, turning back every Wood River shot on goal.
Christine Estep scored late in the second half to make the score 4-0, and Fitzgerald completed the hat trick, scoring her 147th career goal, and provided the final score with her third goal of the game right before the final whistle blew.
Next up for the undefeated Cutthroats (8-0 overall, 6-0 in conference) is a game against Kimberly at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The Lady Wolverines (1-4-3, 0-2-3) will face conference foes Canyon Ridge at home at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 11.
