Is it possible that the way we view charity—nonprofits and their funders—is outdated with unintended consequences?

That’s the premise behind the documentary “Uncharitable,” which will be shown Tuesday at The Argyros.

The public is invited to a free screening of the documentary at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at The Argyros. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. to explore the movie’s relevance at the local level.

Panelists will include Sally Gillespie, Spur Community Foundation; Jenny Emery Davidson, The Community Library; Melissa Mathews, The Argyros; Brooke Pace McKenna, The Hunger Coalition, and Jennifer Wells Green, Sun Valley Museum of Art.

The movie challenging traditional philanthropy was inspired by Dan Pallotta, an entrepreneur and author of “The Everyday Philanthropist” whose TED Talk on charity was voted the most persuasive TED talk of all time. Pallotta created the multi-day charitable event industry, such as multi-day AIDS rides and the Charity Defense Council

“This film draws from history and real-world examples to make the case that moon-shots to solve society’s most pressing challenges are possible,” said Sally Gillespie, executive director of Spur, a Ketchum-based nonprofit that helps donors identify purposeful ways to give their money, while helping nonprofits achieve maximum impact. “We’re excited to present these concepts to our community because we believe our valley has the capacity and deep tradition of generosity that can make local moon-shots possible as needs and opportunities arise.”

The event kicks off Spur’s Giving Thought Learning Series that is part of the “It’s in Our Nature” campaign to promote the vital role generosity and nonprofits play in the community.

Spur Community Foundation is co-presenting this event in partnership with The Argyros and Sun Valley Museum of Art, along with 16 other nonprofit co-hosts: Ballet Sun Valley, Blaine County Charitable Fund, Blaine County Education Foundation, Camp Rainbow Gold, Flourish Foundation, Higher Ground, Men’s Second Chance Living, Sawtooth Botanical Garden, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, The Advocates, The Crisis Hotline/5B Suicide Prevention Alliance, The Community Library, The Hunger Coalition, The Sawtooth Society, The Senior Connection and The Space.
