STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Now that the sheep have strutted out of town, putting a cap on the 29th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, it’s time for the 36th annual Sun Valley Jazz and Music Festival.

This year’s festival will feature 100-plus performances across four venues at Sun Valley Resort.

This year’s festival includes old favorites like the Yve Evans Trio, Terry Myers Big Band, Shaymus Hanlin with his Frank Sinatra stylings, Tom Rigney and Flambeau with their Cajun flair and the High Street Party Band with its party rock ‘n’ roll and Motown classics.

And it also features some new faces like San Lyon, a Los Angeles-based swing jazz quartet that blends early 20th century Parisian Gypsy swing with classic American jazz standards; the Alpha Rhythm kings, which offers a King Size California sound, and Motel Kaliforinia, a tribute band to the Eagles, Tom Petty and Creddance Clearwater Revival.

The music gets underway with Opening Ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Sun Valley’s Limelight Ballroom and continues through the Closing Ceremonies from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.

There’ll be a number of special sets, such as Carolyn Martin’s Patsy Cline Tribute at 5 p.m. Friday and a ‘60s & Veterans Appreciation party at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Wood River High Wind Machine will offer a Free Community Concert at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Satchmo’s, otherwise known as the Boiler Room.

And Atkinsons’ Market is sponsoring free Jazz in the Square concerts from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Ketchum Town Square. Friday’s will feature the Alpha Rhythm Kings; Saturday’s will feature the Dave Bennett 6.

Online tickets are available at https://jazz.ticketspice.com/36th-annual-sun-valley-jazz-festival. Some tickets may also be available at Jazz Headquarters in the Sun Valley Inn. Learn more at https://sunvalleyjazz.com/.
