Olivia Olson of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club delivered an outstanding performance at the Unicorn Dance Trophy held March 27–30 in Hoorn, Netherlands.

Representing the United States, Olson earned a silver medal, placing second overall among a highly competitive international field that included athletes from France, Great Britain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

This achievement marks a historic milestone for the club, as Olson becomes the first athlete from the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club to compete internationally in Solo Ice Dance. Her success not only highlights her dedication and skill, but also places both her and the club on the national and international stage.

Olson is coached by renowned ice dance professionals Judy Blumberg and Natalia Zaitseva, whose expertise and guidance have been instrumental in her development. Bringing home a silver medal in such a competitive field is a significant accomplishment and reflects the strength of her training and commitment.

Solo Ice Dance is a rapidly growing discipline within figure skating and runs parallel to traditional partnered Ice Dance. Skaters perform the same segments, Pattern Dance, Rhythm Dance, and Free Dance, while showcasing the core principles of ballroom dance. Emphasis is placed on edge quality, flow, musical interpretation, and precise timing, with skaters required to maintain a consistent rhythm or theme throughout their performance.

In Solo Ice Dance, athletes execute a variety of required elements to create well-balanced programs. These include dance spins, step sequences, twizzle sequences, pattern dance elements, edge elements, and choreographic sequences. Unlike partnered Ice Dance, where lifts are a key component, Solo Ice Dance replaces lifts with edge elements such as spread eagles, Ina Bauers, hydroblades, and spirals--movements that highlight a skater’s edge control, flexibility, and musicality.

The discipline follows technical requirements established annually by the International Skating Union, ensuring that the sport remains dynamic, current, and engaging for both athletes and audiences.

Olson’s success at the Unicorn Dance Trophy underscores the rising prominence of Solo Ice Dance and serves as an inspiration for future athletes in the Sun Valley community and beyond
