Sun Valley Resort opened in December 1936 as an oasis of luxury in the wilderness of Idaho.
Built for $1.5 million, it attracted Wall Street barons, Hollywood stars and the Chicago social set to a remote area that theretofore had been the baston of Shoshone-Bannock, hardscrabble miners and sheepherders and a few ranchers.
The newcomers found an ultra-modern lodge with New York City amenities and a ski school with Austrian instructors that offered a European ambiance.
Learn the backstory of America’s first destination ski resort Thursday evening when Ketchum author John Lundin presents “Early Sun Valley: Union Pacific, Averell Harriman and Alf Engen.”
The program starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at The Community Library in Ketchum. Attendees may attend in person by making reservations at https://thecommunitylibrary.libcal.com/event/8904482
Chapter One Bookstore will sell copies of Lundin’s book, “Skiing Sun Valley: A History from Union Pacific to the Holdings” for a book signing on site.
The presentation also will be shown on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/678914098
